Andy Helms: His Dark Materials

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

Drawings of His Dark Materials, by Andy HelmsI meant to mention this forever ago, but I forgot. Andy Helms, perennial inspiration that he is, drew wonderful pictures for each of the books in His Dark Materials, the excellent and sometimes kinda really creepy epic kids’ fantasy trilogy by Philip Pullman. HEY PHIL THESE SHOULD BE THE COVERS.

So I found this because I always scrounge through the artdump folder on Andy’s website for inspiration, but then I just saw that actually he has a LiveJournal where he posted all this, so check it.

Hey so BOOHAVEN made it through a week of updates! And now it’s Friday. And it looks like I may go and see my German professor’s DJ boyfriend spin some crazy Brazilian/Angolan hip hop in a venue nestled in the remains of the Berlin Wall. So that’s great.

Have a good weekend! Tell people about BOOHAVEN if it’s not too awkward:

(If you’re into graffiti, just skip the drivel in the next paragraph because you already know it and check the video below.)

Quality graffiti (or “street art”, ha ha) is not just about the quality of the art itself, but where it is and what it does to its environment. Like Banksy said: “People look at an oil painting and admire the use of brushstrokes to convey meaning. People look at a graffiti painting and admire the use of a drainpipe to gain access.” The graffiti that effects people most often doesn’t come from people with great draftsmanship, but from clever bastards with ambition and a message.

Here are some quickie ink sketches from a couple nights ago:
Moudy
Moudy, who was not in fact wearing a turban but a floppy hat and who is an excellent photographer.
Eating Italian with Eddie and Moudy
Moudy and Eddie, who is not 98 years old but my roommate and a musician.
